The Auto Club Speedway (Fontana, California)
In early 1997, Fontana, California joined the NASCAR age by opening its two-mile track then called the California Speedway. Recently renamed to the Auto Club Speedway (for its title sponsor, the Automobile Club of Southern California), this is a D-shaped oval superspeedway that some compare to the quite-similar Michigan International Speedway. As is the trend with most of the nation's major raceways, The Auto Club Speedway also hosts other races featuring motorcycles, drag racers, and others. The lap record at the speedway is held by Gil de Ferran, who ran a 241.426 mph lap on October 28, 2000 during CART qualifying.
